Description
Birdhouse for Chickadee or Wren, custom hand made by Dreams of Thayer Forest with attention to quality and detail.
This nest box is made of rough cedar lumber and assembled with outdoor rated fasteners for a long life. Black-capped Chickadee, Carolina Chickadees, and Wrens are found throughout most of the continental United States. Wrens are in most areas of the south year round residents. Chickadees usually arrive in northern states in mid to late April after wintering in the south. Both birds often have two or more broods a year.
The nest box is created with a 1 1/8 inch entry hole to allow only Wren and Chickadee residents. Any larger opening will allow house sparrow and other birds that will take over the box or destroy the nest. The house is also ventilated to allow for air movement and has bottom holes to allow for any drainage. Chickadee houses can be mounted up to 10′ feet high, but Wrens prefer the house to be between 6 and eight feet. The birdhouses should be spaced 20 to 50 feet apart. If the box is nailed to a tree, use aluminum nails and do not sink the heads all the way to allow for tree growth.
Our nest box is built with a pivot panel on one side to easily access the birdhouse to clean it. The box should be cleaned after each nesting season to remove old material and to assure ants or wasps have not moved into the birdhouse. Having more than one house is also a good thing. Wrens which build two or more nests a year, will seldom use the same nest in the same season. The male Wren will sometimes attract two females to their territory and put twigs in more than one box. The female then chooses the box or location they prefer.
So enjoy bird nesting season and enjoy providing homes and watching the birds in your part of the world.
